Hosting Next.js: Vercel, Cloudflare, and Coolify
Compare Vercel, Cloudflare Workers, and Coolify for a Next.js app: deployment, runtime compatibility, databases, costs, and maintenance.
For a Next.js app, start by deciding who will operate it. Vercel suits teams that want managed Next.js deployment. Cloudflare Workers is worth evaluating when its runtime and services fit the application. Coolify suits teams that want to run apps on their own servers and can maintain them.
Compare the complete workload before choosing. A public website, an authenticated dashboard, and an app with long-running jobs can have different requirements even when they share a framework.
Vercel: managed Next.js deployment
Vercel integrates Git deployments and pull-request previews with Next.js features such as image optimization and incremental static regeneration. Its Next.js documentation explains the supported features and deployment behavior.
This can reduce the infrastructure work around releases. Your team still owns application errors, access controls, data handling, and the design of its caching rules. Include authentication, uploads, and cache invalidation in a deployment trial.
Estimate costs from the resources the application uses. Compute, data transfer, images, and other services can contribute to the bill; traffic count alone is an incomplete forecast. Check Vercel’s current plans and usage pricing, including the plan’s permitted use, before committing.
Consider Vercel when a managed release process matters more to your team than choosing and maintaining the underlying servers.
Cloudflare: check the runtime and data path
Cloudflare provides several paths for Next.js applications on Workers. Check its current deployment guide against your Next.js version and required features. Existing OpenNext projects should also check the adapter’s compatibility guidance before upgrading.
Workers implements many Node.js APIs, but some have partial support or nonfunctional stubs. Test the packages your application uses in the deployed runtime, especially database drivers and libraries that expect a local filesystem. The Node.js compatibility documentation lists those differences.
Choose a database based on queries, data size, and recovery needs. Workers can use D1 or connect to external databases; Hyperdrive supports PostgreSQL and MySQL connections. Measure a complete request, including database access, before drawing conclusions about global speed.
Review Workers pricing and the separate services you need. Include request volume, CPU use, storage, and your caching configuration in the estimate.
Coolify: operate your own servers
Coolify provides a deployment interface for applications, databases, and services on servers you control. Its installation and hosting overview distinguishes self-hosting Coolify from using its managed control plane.
You can place an app and database on one server or separate them. Decide based on capacity, failure recovery, and access requirements. A shared server can simplify a small deployment, but an outage can affect both the app and its data.
Budget for server capacity, storage, backups, network allowances, and maintenance time. A fixed server price does not guarantee a fixed total cost as usage grows. Assign someone to patch systems, monitor disk space, and test restores. Coolify’s firewall guidance is one part of that operational work.
Test the decision with your application
Deploy a representative slice before moving the full project. Check a public page, a signed-in request, an image upload, and a database operation. Measure performance from the regions where your users work.
Then rehearse a failed release and a data restore. Compare the monthly estimate alongside the time your team will spend operating the service. Choose the option you can support when something goes wrong.
